He 2017 Belmont Stakes is upon us and unfortunately there will be no Triple Crown winner in 2017 after two seperate winners at the Kentucky Derby and The Preakness. The Belmont Stakes has aired on many different broadcast channels over the year. For the 2017 Belmont Stakes, NBC Sports is the place to watch it. NBC Sports has a contract with the New York Racing Association that allows them to air the Belmont Stakes through the 2020 race.

Belmont Stakes 2017

It did not take long after Tonalistcrossed the Belmont Stakes finish line for the co-owner of California Chrome, Steve Coburn, to lash out. 'This is a coward's way out. It's not fair to these horses that are running their guts out.'

Coburn was upset that his Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner was beaten in the final leg of the Triple Crown by a colt that had not run in either of the first two legs. Whether you believe that he had a good point, or that it was merely sour grapes, or you fall somewhere in between, the fact of the matter is that fresh horses (defined as those that did not run in either the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness) have won five of the last ten editions of the Belmont.

In 2017, the large majority of horses currently listed on the probable/possible list for the Belmont have either run in the Derby of the Preakness, or both. So who will be the fresh horses for this year's Test of a Champion? As of now, the list includes only three ...

EpicharisKiyoshi Hagiwara / Christophe Lemaire

(Gold Allure -- Stapes Mitsuko, by Carnegie)

The stakes will be high on June 10 for this young star from Japan. Not only will the grandson of Sunday Silence be running for first prize in the final leg of the Triple Crown, but also a $1 million bonus offered by the NYRA to Japanese-based runners. Better yet, he has a shot. Last year, Japan's Lani ran a big race to be third in the Belmont. Epicharis is a very different horse than Lani. While that one had no early speed, this Japanese-bred colt is full of early run.

Clearly the best three-year-old dirt horse in Japan, he rifled through his first four races in his native land. He has been pointed for the Belmont Stakes for a long time, and despite losing his undefeated record narrowly at Meydan, he gives every indication of being a world class competitor. A July foal, he will be the youngest horse in the field, but with both good international experience, and a break since his last race, he cannot be discounted.

Let's take a look not only at his most recent race, a very game performance in the rich UAE Derby, but also his final race of 2016, where his free-wheeling running style was on full display back in his native Japan ...

MeantimeBrian Lynch/ Jose Ortiz

(Shackleford -- Livermore Leslie, by Mt. Livermore)

Meantime is out of the first crop of the 2011 Preakness winner, Shackleford. He is also a half-brother to the multiple Grade 1 winner, Sweet Reason. Brought along slowly, the Brian Lynch-trainee did not make his first start until the third week of February, but he's made big strides of late. Second and third in his first two tries, both at Gulfstream Park, the chestnut colt broke his maiden like a good thing on April 22 at Keeneland.

The 7 1/2-length score in the nine-furlong maiden race not only underscored his talent, but demonstrated he was just fine around two-turns. Off that effort, he was moved forward into Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont. The track came up sloppy, but he ran a solid second to the unbeaten Timeline in his stakes debut.

While he will need to improve to make big noise in the Belmont, his recent races, as well as his strong pedigree, make him an interesting candidate to make another move forward, much like what was done last week at Pimlico by Cloud Computing.

Belmont Stakes 2017 Winners List 2019

(Creative Cause -- Tiffany Twisted, by Thunder Gulch)

Not nominated to the Triple Crown, this one would need to be supplemented to the final leg at a cost of $75,000. It might just be worth the expense. From the same barn that has already given us top three-year-olds; Cloud Computing, Practical Joke, and Timeline, Twisted Tom continues to improve for trainer, Chad Brown. He also has the ability to uncork a wicked late turn of foot as evidenced in two of his four career victories.

In both his maiden breaker, on the turf at Belmont, and the Private Terms Stakes at Laurel, the son of Creative Cause had no business winning at the eighth pole, but unleashed impressive late surges to get up for the wins. Now a winner of three straight, and unbeaten at three, he will need to prove that he can make the jump from stakes racing in Maryland to the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes.

It's a big jump, but he's in the right hands and has never been better. The gelding has plenty of reason to appreciate a distance, as well, being a grandson of both Giant's Causeway and the Belmont Stakes winner, Thunder Gulch. Take a look at his late burst to earn his first stakes win two starts back ...
